Thermoplastic Products We Offer
Prepreg
Individual layers of a substrate saturated with a thermoplastic resin in sheets or rolls in widths to 22". Resin content can be to your specification. Applications include:
- Construction of laminates
- Construction of shapes such as tubes
- Use as a reinforced barrier layer
- Use as a surfacing sheet
- Local reinforcement
Laminates
Multiple layers of fiber substrate bonded together with thermoplastic resin.
Resins
- We believe that we can work with most any resin
- In some cases we can blend different resins within the same laminate
Fiber Selection
- We can blend woven, unidirectional, and other forms of substrates within a single laminate
- We can blend glass, carbon, and/or other fibers within a single laminate
Fiber Direction
- Uni-directional: all fibers are in one direction or unbalanced with more fibers in one direction
- Balanced: equal amounts of fibers in 0 and 90
- Quasi-isotropic
Applications for Laminates
- Machining - Laminates can be made which permit close tolerance and fine detail machining.
- Thermoforming - Well consolidated sheets are critical for high speed thermoforming. Our material is geared for the typical fast cycle times of 3-7 minutes and mold costs of standard thermoforming.
Continuous Fiber Reinforced (CFR) thermoplastics have higher heat resistance, impact strength, flexural strength and stiffness. They permit thinner walls, with less weight than neat resin. They can replace steel and specialty metals in high performance industrial applications.
Forming of plain sheet usually involves some stretching of the sheet. Most composite sheets do not stretch. We can engineer sheets that will:
- Permit some stretch or deeper draws
- Permit the individual layers to slip relative to each other
- Permit very fine detail on the surface
Tailored properties include variable axis reinforcement (0, 90, +/- 45), reinforcement type (glass, carbon, etc,), and fiber volumes.
Preforms
We can supply simple forms such as window frames, and we can vary the gauge within a sheet. This can save material and/or processing time in subsequent manufacturing steps.
